At Nissan, the name Patrol dates back to the early 1950s and invariably refers to the 4X4 franchisor of the Japanese manufacturer. In 1988, Nissan released a GR (Grand Raid) version of its Patrol. This one was more modern, more comfortable, wider and traded its leaf suspensions for springs. It had a manual rear axle differential lock and a new turbo diesel unit. The Patrol GR had a very good commercial career which continued in competition on Rally Raids all over the world. At Paris-Dakar, the Norman dealer André Dessoude, nicknamed “The sorcerer of Saint-Lô” made it a war machine by winning the “production vehicles” category several times.
