Exceptionally, the 38th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans took place on the 28th and 29th September following the French unrest of May 1968. Ford engaged their GT40 that was at the time the favourite following two consecutive wins during the mythic Sarthe race. The number 9, in the hands of Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi, were victorious the following day and 331 laps. This victory reinforced the stranglehold of the American manufacturer on enduring cars. The Gulf livery and its sky blue and orange colours definitively became part of the GT mythology from that day onwards.
